The Science, Ethics & Society Initiative (SESI) is an exciting collaborative venture between the Center for Ethics and the Program in Science and Society.
The goal of SESI is to capture and focus the growing interest and energy among students and the greater community with regard to issues in bioethics, including the impact of modern genetic technology on health and food; the role of society, religion, politics, and economics in bioethical decision making; and the dire need to sustain our environment. For more information, contact the program's director, Arri Eisen.

By Arri Eisen, PhD
Did you know that slaves helped build part of the original Emory campus? That when it first integrated its student body, Emory University stood up to the state of Georgia, which threatened to withdraw the university's tax-exempt status if it did so? That an Emory professor resigned under pressure in the 1920's for writing an article against lynching?
How and why do the answers to these questions matter for Emory and the greater community today? Can the answers to these questions transform university culture so that our regular 'racial incidents' occur less frequently? Or so that we respond more thoughtfully to them?
